Sited in a Conservation Area in central Bristol, this housing
provides accommodation for 357 students, in self-catering flats
of 5 or 6 rooms, each with a generous bay-windowed kitchen.
In order to restore an appropriate street elevation between
adjacent listed buildings, it was important to control the scale
and rhythm, and to achieve this the inevitable paired windows
are set into larger recesses. The kitchens are generally located
on the street elevations, with their bays angled extensions
on the wall plane. Glimpses of the activities of the students
add to the life of the street and in turn allow them excellent
views of their surroundings. The rooms are set around landscaped
courtyards.
